December 25, 2006 (Press Release) --
Starting in 1967, an annual meeting between IND and Mercy has attracted the largest crowd to view a girls’ basketball game in Baltimore. It’s one of the most fierce and timeless rivalries in high school basketball. The inaugural meeting took place in the Baltimore Civic Center, now the 1st Mariner Arena, a game IND won 31-23. Over the years the venue has changed, usually to accommodate the growing number of fans for both teams that show up to support their teams. Currently the Towson Center on the campus of Towson University is the venue of one of the premier high school events in the Baltimore area. The 2006 meeting at Towson was a sold-out double-overtime thriller. The 67-64 IND win brought the overall series record to a 16-24 lead by Mercy.
With this game, throw the scouting reports and win-loss records out of the window. Throw the coaching experience in the can, because this game is about bragging rights. The coaches will try to yell over the 5,000 screaming fans, and fans will scream with every bad play. Both teams will play with more heart than seen before. Bottom line, this game has more than pride involved, it has passion as well.
IND Athletic Director and alumna, Amy Conly says, “The pageantry surrounding the event makes it more than just one more game on the schedule for both teams. The competition between the cheerleaders, pep squads, and alumnae and students singing their Alma Maters make it a homecoming for past classes of IND students. Last season's game was a sellout with many people turned away at the door. Plan on getting your tickets early when they go on sale in January to make sure you are able to take in this great event.”
