Make The Dream Real: 9th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. National Holiday Celebration
Monday January 15, 2007 from 10am to Noon, Reception to Follow:
Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church, 12th and Adeline Streets in Oakland, CA
On January 15, 2007 from 10am to noon Reverend Ron Swisher of Taylor Memorial, renowned author and founder of Friends of Creation Spirituality Dr. Matthew Fox, and the Attitudinal Healing Connection, Inc. will host the 9th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. National Holiday Celebration at Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church (1188 12th St. at Adeline) in Oakland, CA. This free event includes the sharing of a community meal following the program.
The focus is to make the King Holiday a day of service, and not just a day off work. During the 2006 Celebration, more than 700 people gathered at Taylor Memorial to honor the legacy of Dr. King. Many signed up to volunteer and practice the art of being the change we wish to see in the world. We intend to build upon this work. This year, we have had more than 100 homicides in Oakland. We must stop the violence now. It is urgent that we gather to deepen our knowledge of Dr. King’s teachings and other nonviolent alternatives. We will be asking local citizens not only to celebrate with us, but also to sign up for volunteer service in the community.
The upcoming Celebration highlights the work of women as peacemakers – first and foremost, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, who we lost this year. Without her persistence and hard work, there would be no Holiday to celebrate. Author/storyteller/spiritual leader Chief Luisah Teish, will keynote the event and special guests include Dr. Eloise Oliver Elder Minister of East Bay Church of Religious Science and Fania Davis, co-founder of RJOY, Restorative Justice for Oakland’s Youth.
There will be an Indigenous Native American prayer by Keya Kessler, Lakota Elder, Sundance and Lodge Leader; music by Oakland Interfaith Youth Gospel Chorus, directed by Terrance Kelly, and the Unity
Youth Choir of Taylor Memorial, directed by, Ishmael Combs. We will also enjoy the music of soloists Dezorah Smith and 8 year old Destiney Knuckles; storytelling by Africa Williams; and Sacred Drumming by
Kokomon Clottey, Ghanaian author and co-founder of the Attitudinal Healing Connection, Inc. We will continue to honor individuals who have offered exemplary service in education, philanthropy, community, and
youth activism with Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Awards.
According to Matthew Fox, “the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration has grown to be more than just a way of honoring Dr. King’s passionate vision; it has become a platform for moving his vision forward through building
understanding and fostering harmony amongst communities i
