Nutritional supplements make a huge difference to the condition of our health. Vitamins and minerals, as we often know them as, are the body’s building blocks. Many people take nutritional supplements devotedly. Children too are forced by their mothers to take their daily dose of vitamins.
But there is a lot of confusion on the different types of vitamins and minerals. Multivitamins and minerals come in various forms- as powder in a hard capsule, as liquid in a soft shelled capsule or as a pill. All these forms have the required vitamins and minerals mixed together.
Most of the vitamin capsules have their origin from animal gelatin. For vegetarians this may not be pleasing to know. Vegetarians need to check the label to see if the capsule shell is of vegetable origin.
Often people are repelled by the smell and discoloration that occurs in multivitamins over a period of time. This is due to the reaction of Vitamin B with the rest of the ingredients in the capsule or tablet. Liquid vitamins do not have this problem. However, both are safe to use despite the changes that occur due to the atmospheric conditions.
Then there is the chewable type of vitamin and mineral supplements that people, especially children use. Because vitamins are not great tasting, they are made palatable by adding sweeteners and flavors. But this compromises on the quality, as the odorous ingredients have to be removed. It would be a good idea to check the labels and read them carefully to see what additives have been used. People who are diabetic need to use vitamins with artificial sweeteners added to them.
Some vitamins and minerals are of the time-released variety. These can prove to be good in the long run as there is an optimal absorption in the body because of the gradual release of the supplements in the body over a longer period of time. But it is still unclear if this theory holds good.
