World Memon Organisation’s (WMO) Board of Trustees and Board of Management met in Dubai, UAE on December 23-26, 2006. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Haji Razak Gandhi of ARY Digital Network. Besides being the President of WMO, he also hosted the meeting and coordinated with Mr. M. Rafiq Noorani.
Mr. Gandhi urged Memon Community and talked about the need of cohesiveness and unity, which he thought was the need of time. Mr. Gandhi also requested the attendees to pay special attention to the youth of Memon Community; as they are future and the building block for the years ahead.
WMO is an umbrella organization of 1.2 million Memon around the world. Memon community is known for their business acumen and philanthropy. WMO has seven chapters they are as follows; Pakistan, India, Fareast, Middle-east, South Africa, UK and our won USA.
In initial phase of the meeting budget of 2005 was reviewed and passed and a budget for 2006-7 was passed. Many issues challenging the Memon Community were discussed, but the emphasis was given to the needs of housing projects, Micro-economics and above all the education. In Sri Lanka 100 homes were build as coop, estimated cost of these houses were approximately one million dollars and 50% were contributed by WMO. In Indian side, since the last meeting 135 scholarships were awarded higher education and quarter million dollars were awarded so far. Lastly, the Pakistan Chapter where 210 houses were built or bought for the needy families. In last year’s major Earth Quake more than 100 million rupees were donated and volunteers from Karachi and Sind went to Earth Quake stricken areas. “We at WMO, are proud of helping the community, which was located 10,000 feet above the sea level.” said Mr. Yasin Saya of WMO central.
A session was dedicated for Memon Medical Institute, which is under construction in Karachi Pakistan, near Karachi International Airport. This will be on completion approximately 330 bedded hospital with state of the art equipment, estimated worth of this hospital is approximately 900 million rupees. Phase one of the hospital will be completed at the end of 2007, in which general 120 bed hospital will be functional. A German team of experts are advising the board as stated by Dr. Tufail Mohammed. Mr. Diwan, Chairperson of the board of MMI and Mr. Ajaz Saya CEO of MMI spoke on the occasion. They enjoyed great support from Memon Community present at the meeting.
Mr. Yousuf Tar, President of USA chapter stated that there is need to organize Memons living in USA and Canada. The main goal of the North America Chapter is to provide financial assistance to WMO and to promote professional education amongst younger generation.
An open unrestricted policy was adopted by the Board of WMO, which for professional education like Memon youngster becoming a lawyer, doctor or engineer etc. there will be no Memon student who will be denied of any financial assistance.
Over all meeting was successful and Board of WMO has setup long and short term goals, and next general body meeting will be in Karachi, Pakistan in Mid April 2007.
