Inspired by the sad events of 2006 which included the tragic death of James Kim and the climbers on Mt. Hood, RescueWiki has set out to become a universal resource for search and rescue professionals

Today sees the launch of RescueWiki (www.rescuewiki.com), a new website that aims to be the universal resource for Search and Rescue professionals around the world. The site will also help people prepare for their adventures in the great outdoors.
The site's creation was inspired by the sad story of James Kim, the CNET editor who died in the Oregon wilderness. After watching interview with law enforcement, the site's creator, Ian Anderson, decided it was time for the search and rescue community to have a singular resource for information. The rescuers did not have all of the resources or the expertise they needed and in emergency situations, every minute is critical.
The community at large is loosely knit of fire and police departments, volunteer rescue groups, and other groups. Some books have been written on the subject over the years, but there is no single place that these groups can go to find the expertise they need.
Using the same collaborative Wiki technology used by Wikipedia, these professionals will be able to share their expertise and get in touch with each other when search and rescue situations arise. They will be able to share advice on the latest techniques and equipment and share their lessons learned from their hard-earned experience. They will also have access to an unparalleled database of contact information for specialized rescue groups worldwide.
The site will also feature information for adventurers on how best to prepare for the outdoors, how to survive if the worst happens, and how to maximize their chances for survival.
While RescueWiki may not be able to save lives, it's hoped that the information on the site will lead to better trained and equipped rescuers, faster access to critical information, and better prepared adventurers.
