January 3, 2007 (Press Release) --
Eagles and Giants fans are going to be paying over 25% more for tickets on the secondary market than fans from any of the other six teams participating in this weekend’s Wild Card Playoff round.
That was the case on Tuesday afternoon when SeatSmart took a snapshot of the markets for each game. The survey covered hundreds of sellers listing on the most popular sites on the web. The average ticket price for the Giants-Eagles game was $447.
“It was no surprise to see that the Giants-Eagles game was at the top of the list for average price per ticket. It is a divisional match-up with geographical proximity and a lot of history,” said Larry Kokoszka, President of SeatSmart. ”However, we were shocked at how much more the average ticket was going for when compared to tickets for the other games this weekend.”
The Patriots game against the Jets is also a divisional rivalry that has both history and geographical proximity. However, the average ticket price for that game was a mere $255 - good for third out of four games scheduled for this weekend.
“The Patriots game lacks one thing the Eagles game does not - novelty,” said Kokoszka. ”Attending a home playoff game has been somewhat of a pipedream for Eagles fans over the past couple of years. To actually get one raises the level of excitement. Patriots fans are a little more used to the playoffs though. That’s not to say they are not hungry. They have just gotten used to keeping their wallets in their pocket until later rounds.”
The second highest prices are for Qwest Field in Seattle, where the average ticket is running at about $299 per person. “Seahawks fans are now seasoned veterans following two home games last post-season. However, the fact that they are playing the Cowboys has kept prices up. Everyone knows Cowboy fans are everywhere and are willing to travel and pay the price for good seats,” said Kokoszka.
The best value was found in the Midwest at the RCA Dome for the Chiefs and Colts game. “The ticket-price-to-talent ratio tends to be a bit low for the Colts compared to other NFL teams anyway,” said Kokoszka. “And the fact that the Chiefs snuck into the playoffs on Sunday means that many of their fans don’t really have the time to prepare for a trip to Indiana. We don’t think there will be much of an upswing in prices on these tickets.”
Data from SeatSmart's price comparison search engine showed the Eagles-Giants game with 6426 total tickets listed for a total of $2.8 million dollars and an average price of $447. The Seahawks-Cowboys matchup showed 5211 tickets for $1.55 million and an average of $399. The Patriots-Jets game showed 4535 tickets at $1.1 milllion for an average of $254. The Colts-Chiefs game had 4893 tickets at $1.1 million and an average of $227.
