More than 800 volunteers are needed for the 2007 Special Olympics North Carolina Basketball & Cheerleading Tournament to take place in Cabarrus County Feb. 23-25.

January 11, 2007 (Press Release) -- RALEIGH, N.C. –More than 800 volunteers are needed for the 2007 Special Olympics North Carolina Basketball & Cheerleading Tournament to take place in Cabarrus County Feb. 23-25, according to SONC President/CEO Keith L. Fishburne. Athletes from 81 local Special Olympics programs across the state have been invited to compete in the event.

Volunteers are needed to fill positions such as announcer, court assistant, venue support, volunteer registration and cheer team. Businesses, civic organizations, churches and youth groups are encouraged to get involved or form teams and be fans in the stands at the tournament, cheering on the athletes as they go for the gold. All volunteers will receive a free T-shirt and position-specific training. Interested individuals should call the SONC Volunteer Hotline at 800-843-6276, option 4 or download and complete an individual or group registration form at www.sonc.net and mail it in.

Local Special Olympics programs that received quota for the event represent the following counties/agencies: Ashe
Alamance, Alexander, Beaufort/Hyde, Bertie, Brunswick, Buncombe, Burke, Cabarrus, Caldwell, Carteret, Caswell Center, Catawba, Chatham, Cherokee, Chowan, Cleveland, Craven, Cumberland, Currituck, Dare, Davidson, Davie, Duplin, Durham, Forsyth, Gaston, Gates, Graham, Granville, Greene, Guilford/Greensboro, Guilford/High Point, Halifax, Haywood, Henderson, Hoke, Iredell, Jackson, Johnston, Jones, Lee, Lenoir, Lincoln, Macon, Madison, Martin, McDowell, Mecklenburg, Mitchell, Moore, Murdoch Center, Nash, New Hanover, Onslow, Orange, Pasquotank/Camden, Pender, Perquimans, Person, Pitt, Qualla Boundary, Randolph, Robeson, Rockingham, Rowan, Sampson, Scotland, Stanly, Surry, Transylvania, Union, Vance Wake, Washington, Watauga, Wayne, Wilkes, Wilson, Yadkin, and Yancey.

The tournament will feature competition among more than 1000 athletes from across the state in basketball individual skills, three-on-three and five-on-five team competition and cheerleading. Competition venues are: A. L. Brown High School, C.C. Griffin Middle School, Central Cabarrus High School, Concord High School, Concord Middle School, Forest Park Elementary School, Harris Road Middle School, J. N. Fries Middle School, Jay Robinson High School, Kannapolis Intermediate School, Kannapolis Middle School, Mount Pleasant High School, Mount Pleasant Middle School, Northwest Cabarrus High School and Northwest Cabarrus Middle School.

Special Olympics North Carolina offers year-round sports training and competition for more than 37,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities. These athletes inspire greatness through their success and provide motivation to the thousands of coaches, sports officials, local program committee members and event organizers involved in Special Olympics statewide. SONC offers Olympic-type competition in 20 sports on local and state level.
