January 13, 2007 (Press Release) --
In a joint statement issued Thursday, they said, ''It has always been our preference not to comment on the status of our relationship, but, out of respect for the time we've spent together, we feel compelled to do so now, in light of recent speculation and the number of inaccurate stories that are being reported by the media.
''We have, in fact, ended our romantic relationship and have done so mutually and as friends, with continued love and respect for one another.''
Beyond this statement, representatives for both stars refused to comment any further.
The relationship began in 2003, but the pair have been apart a lot the past year. However, they will be ''together'' -- if only in an animated sense -- co-starring in the upcoming sequel, ''Shrek the Third.''
TAKE A CHANCE ON HER: Meryl Streep's super-busy career gets even more hectic this year as she tackles a starring role in the long-anticipated big-screen version of the international hit ''Mamma Mia,'' based on the music of that iconic 1970s Swedish pop group ABBA.
A source tells me the Oscar winner has been listening to ABBA music virtually nonstop -- at home, on her iPod, in her car -- prepping to play the role of the mother in the upcoming film.
Talk about total immersion in ''Dancing Queen'' and ''Take a Chance on Me''!
The movie also is expected to mark the feature film directing debut of noted British stage director Phyllida Lloyd. Among the producers will be Streep's fellow double-Academy Award winner Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, and ABBA members and songwriters Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus.
But the big news: This will mark the first role for Streep in a movie musical -- though she has proved her singing ability in such films as last year's ''A Prairie Home Companion,'' ''Postcards From the Edge'' and ''Death Becomes Her.''
For anyone who hasn't seen ''Mamma Mia,'' it's a tale of a bride-to-be and her formerly rebellious mother (Streep) who brought her up on a Greek island but kept the identify of her father a secret. The bride then invites to her wedding three men who might be her father.
A REAL TOAST: While the ''theme song'' of ''Die Fledermaus'' famously celebrates champagne, the cast members in Lyric Opera's current production naturally quaff ginger ale onstage. So it's understandable that a number of ''Fledermaus'' singers -- including Bo Skovhus, Andrea Rost, Martin Gantner, Marlis Petersen and Bryan Griffin -- were delighted to drink the real thing at the Tasting Room on West Randolph Street following the Wednesday matinee.
