January 16, 2007 (Press Release) --
The architectural firm behind the Melbourne Sport and Aquatic Centre at the centre of the recent Commonwealth Games will now be designing the venues for the next games in New Delhi in 2010.
Design director Peter Brook said the Melbourne-based practice was delighted to win the highly sought after contract to design multipurpose sports venues at the Indian games.
“The venues will be used for table tennis, basketball and volleyball,” he said.
“I think it speaks volumes of the success of the Melbourne Sport and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne earlier this year.”
Having completed the highly successful MSAC Stage 1, Peddle Thorp designed the extension of stage two for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
This included a 54 metre outdoor pool with four metre moveable boom.
It also features a multi-level 700-space car park, office accommodation and meeting rooms for state sporting bodies.
It had additional water leisure features and shops to deal with the influx of visitors and demands increasing on the centre.
Peddle Thorp is one of Australia’s major architectural practices. It has a strong and successful record in sporting venues having designed Vodafone Arena and Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne as well as Skilled Stadium in Geelong.
Aside from Melbourne, it has also designed the Pisa Multipurpose Stadium in Penang and the award winning Teda Soccer Stadium near Beijing – which may be used in the forthcoming Olympic Games.
Mr Brook said it was great to see that a Melbourne company was competing on the world stage and winning contracts of this type.
Peddle Thorp’s folio of work now ranges from art galleries to aquariums, sporting stadiums to streetscapes, hospitals to hotels, residential interiors to retail developments.
