New Delhi, Jan 15, 2007 : The race for the head of country's top intelligence wing Research and Analysis Wing is heating up with senior most officer from within the department Ashok Chaturvedi emerging as front runner.
Chaturvedi is all set to take over as new RAW Chief. He is senior most officers in the organization. Chaturvedi belongs to 1970 batch. In the race for the top slot in the organization, which handles India's spy operations abroad, Chaturvedi has defeated present Commissioner of Delhi Police K K Paul who had the blessing of the Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil.
According to sources several names for the post were discussed in the meeting of the cabinet committee on appointments last week and there was a majority view that senior most officer from within the organization should be given preference as could better lead the department than any other outsider.
Only after the CCA gave its approval, the sources say Prime Minister Manmohan Singh cleared the appointment of Chaturvedi. He is considered to be an upbring officer who had vast experience in the field.
