U.S. Elderly Picking Tai Chi Over Yoga
Yoga May Be More Mainstream, but Seniors are Turning to Tai Chi’s Simpler Poses
Maybe it’s the tight outfits now associated with yoga or the strain on knees and other joint areas, but more seniors are opting for the Eastern healing and strengthening power of Tai Chi these days.
According to the health website, Health A to Z, medical studies confirm what Tai Chi practitioners have known for centuries - that just 20 minutes a day of Tai Chi can dramatically improve balance, significantly cutting the risk of falls among older people. Tai Chi has also been documented as improving leg and lower body strength, increasing flexibility, helping with arthritis pain, aid in the recovery of injuries, and a recent study presented at the American Heart Association meeting even found that just 12 weeks of Tai Chi resulted in a small but significant drop in blood pressure in older people.
Bringing the healing and energy-boosting power of Tai Chi (Taiji) into the mainstream and the convenience of the living room is world-class martial artist Master Ren Guangyi, whose Chen Taijiquan DVD demonstrates this ancient art of relaxation and self-defense. The DVD is narrated by Master Ren’s longtime student: legendary musician Lou Reed, who created two ambient electronic music soundtracks that viewers may choose between.
Chen Taiji is the most popular form of Tai Chi (Taiji) in the world and the Chen Taijiquan DVD, captured in high-definition in New York’s Central Park, is certain to be one of the most popular instructional videos. The DVD pushes the limits of the format, offering multiple language subtitles, and multi-angle viewing.
You can also talk to Master Ren about:
• Performing onstage with Lou Reed in concerts worldwide
• Training actor Hugh Jackman and providing other martial arts choreography in Darren Aronofsky's recent film, “The Fountain.”
• The quantitative health effects of practicing Tai Chi – from healing disease to boosting energy
• Countering Western medicine’s resistance to Eastern healing techniques
• Beyond exercise: Chen Taijiquan as self-defense
• How to incorporate Chen Taijiquan in your daily routine.
Satisfying all ages and skill levels, Chen Taijiquan promotes fitness, coordination and relaxation using slow, fluid movements, punctuated with quick bursts of energy. Regular practice promotes wellness and boosts the immune system, while providing an overview of Tai Chi’s self-defense potential. Master Ren’s Chen Taijiquan is a natural antidote for the deterioration that everyday stress causes to the body.
Master Ren is the senior disciple of the 19th generation Chen standard-bearer, Chen Xiao Wang. Contact Laura Donnelly at PR by the Book, (512) 809-4618 or laurad@prbythebook.com for an interview or review copy.
