January 29, 2007 (Press Release) --
Computer users can often reduce their printing costs significantly by using cheap inks. Depending on the inkjet model, 5,000 sheets of paper can cost as little as 50 dollars to print with cheap ink, say the editors of Berlin-based "test" magazine.
The same quantity printed using ink from the printer maker costs 1,050 dollars, a comparative study by the German consumer testing organisation Stiftung Warentest in Berlin found.
In some cases, however, the cheaper inks can lead to degradation of print quality, the report admitted. Cheap ink from certain companies proved less durable against fading and smudging than inks from the printer makers.
Some printers also refused to work with the cheap cartridges or the cartridges were not properly filled. There were no cases of actual damage to printers by the third-party inks, however, despite the frequent claims made on the web pages of printer makers. Not one of the 17 printers broke down over the course of the long-term testing.
