January 30, 2007 (Press Release) --
Put simply, fantasy sports work by fans choosing a team from a pool of real sports stars. Those players accumulate points for the fan based on their actual weekly performances. Various varieties of interactive online sporting games such as tipping competitions and salary cap fantasy games have been implemented so far in Australasia with a fair amount of success. However, to date, the more in depth and more entertaining American-style of fantasy sports is in its relative infancy in this part of the world.
InteractiveNRL.com plans to change that.
American-Style Fantasy Sports takes the fan’s experience to a whole new level. The real sports stars are allocated to the team that the fan creates based on a draft system. This way no two teams in a league can have the same player on their roster (as in real life) and users need to use their skill and acumen to upgrade their roster by trading players with other teams in their league and also by finding underrated players to add to their squad – players that no other user has in their team. Also, with salary cap leagues, the points a team earns are accumulated over the season to find the winner – whereas with American-Style leagues, teams compete in a round robin competition which culminates in a fiercely competitive playoff system to decide who wins each league, much the same way that actual sporting competitions work. This concept develops weekly match ups against rivals and produces ‘trash talking’ that salary cap leagues can not generate.
The realism of this concept of American-Style fantasy sport has made the American public stand up and take notice. "According to figures from the Fantasy Sports Trade Association - yes, this is big enough of a market to warrant a real trade group - there are currently between 15 million and 18 million fantasy sports players in the U.S. The number of players has grown 7 percent to 10 percent a year for the past three years." ESPN even has a weekly show devoted to the topic.
Rugby League provides the perfect fit with the Fantasy Sports concept. The NRL (Australia’s flagship Rugby League competition) was established in 1904 and has since then become one of the most popular and closely followed sporting competitions in Australasia. This year the NRL will see the introduction of a Monday night game and an expansion team from the Gold Coast will be entering the competition which will further increase the popularity of the NRL.
