NEW YORK, NY—JANUARY 31, 2007—Stephen Earley Jordan II’s Beyond Bougie, released May 2006, discusses race, class, and gender issues in creative nonfiction, essays, and poetry.
• February 7, 9 pm-11 pm, Jordan will perform spoken word poetry at The Baby Grand Piano Bar (5328 Old National Highway), Atlanta, Ga.
• February 10, 10 am-1 pm, Jordan will sign copies of Beyond Bougie at Nubian Bookstore, Southlake Mall (1000 Southlake Mall), Morrow, Ga.
• February 26, 6-7:30 pm, Jordan will speak at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (Ohio Room, Hadley Union Building), sponsored by the Six O’Clock Series and African American Cultural Center. He will be reading and discussing issues posed in Beyond Bougie, such as Black-on-Black discrimination, the foundation of Black Americans and specific traditions, the history of self-loathing among Black Americans, and progressivism.
Beyond Bougie also discusses eating disorders and narcissism as male disorders in “. . .On Male Self-Image,” while "How it Feels to be a Vanderbilt" reports creatively on material slavery to name brand clothing. Other selections, such as "Why (K)not?" and "Bukkake: A Love Story,” capture the macabre vulnerability rooted in all humans through true tales of extreme dominance, subservience, and betrayal.
