Author Bill Stephens launched the Blog, www.horizonspast.com , this week allowing the reading public free access to his novel, Horizons Past. The Blog is set up to allow readers to print out their personal copy from PDF files. Stephens also hosts a series of videos under the screen name “Olwriter” on YouTube.com and other video sites talking about the novel and reading comments and criticisms of readers.
Stephens has written over 1,000 columns and features during the last 20 years for Hart-Hanks, Murdoch, and Hearst newspapers and for various national food, wine, travel, and outdoor periodicals. “I always wanted to write a novel during that time,” he reminisced. “But it always seemed too daunting, so I never got around to it,”
Then something clicked according to the novelist, “And I just started writing, writing and revising, and revising some more.” At the completion of the novel, Stephens was so elated he just wanted a chance for everyone to read the novel for free.
Horizons Past is set on the Texas Coast in both Port Aransas and Corpus Christi, and tells the story of a movie star filming on location who becomes attracted to an older reclusive poet living in a remote area. The recluse often writes his poetry in the beach sand to test its durability. These opposites collide and humor abounds as they try to develop a relationship in the accelerated timeframe of movie making.
“I felt the Texas Coast beach scene venue would be a refreshing departure from the cliché big city East and West Coast settings so common in fiction,” Stephens explained. “Besides I’d already done the research.” He’s owned a beach house on Texas’ Mustang Island for almost two decades.
In addition to posting a chapter weekly on horizonspast.com, the Blog has a Forum in which readers can comment, critique, offer revisions, rant, rave or just chat about the novel. “Readers can even write their own fan fiction using the book’s characters and settings,” said Stephens. “Then we can critique their work.” There also are games like “Rename This Novel” and “Be a Movie Producer” where readers can pick actors for each of the characters in the “Horizons Past” movie.
“I’m very gratified at the ready acceptance of www.horizonspast.com ,” said the author. “My agent has received several publisher inquiries about the book as a result of the Blog, and readers seem to enjoy reading it.”
