February 1, 2007 (Press Release) --
Because of the huge success registered on the market with its tiny console, Nintendo decided to increase the monthly production to at least 1 million units, in order to satisfy strong demand.
While reporting its fiscal performance of the past quarter, the Associated Press reports Nintendo shared that it met its original forecast of shipping 4 million units by the end of 2006, and that it still intends to have 7 million manufactured by the end of this fiscal year, which ends on March 31st.
In order to meet such a forecast, Nintendo says it's increasing production capacity to over a million Wii consoles per month. At such a pace, by the end of this year, over 18 million consoles would be produced. To give scale to such a figure, the Nintendo Gamecube sold 22 million units over the course of six years. Clearly, Nintendo's aggressive pacing shows they expect better success with their latest console.
For those still empty-handed in finding a Wii, this increase in production should be comforting news, as the greater number of consoles available should make it easier to find one.
In the first nine months of the fiscal year Nintendo Co., which is also the manufacturer of GameBoy Advance and Nintendo DS handheld machines, recorded group net profit of 131.9 billion yen ($1.1 billion; 850 million), a dazzling increase in revenue compared to last years 92.2 billion yen (from the same period).
But its not exactly Wii that is responsible for this outstanding achievement. Its Nintendo Developers System (or better known as Dual Screen or simply Nintendo DS). DS is now the fastest-selling video game system in the world, being now in the hands of more than 10 million consumers in the Americas.
Since launching in November 2004, nearly nine Nintendo DS or DS Lite portable game systems have sold every 60 seconds.
"More than 5 million people joined the ranks as Nintendo DS owners in America last year alone," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "And right now, they're all saying the same thing'give me more!' Fortunately, no matter your taste or experience in gaming, that's exactly what we're supplying in the months to come."
