February 6, 2007 (Press Release) --
Collecting, or just appreciating old Posters and Advertising materials is an absorbing hobby for thousands of people around the world.
However, buying posters can be a hugely expensive business with many examples selling for thousands of dollars – and just for original prints and not original artwork!
Even the purchase of reference books can be expensive, and although many people choose their own specific areas of interest, they usually have to settle for just a section in a book that gratifies this choice.
However, now there is an alternative through the BIG Books of Old Posters, compiled by Norman Clark – the long-term international Ad-man. As a Graphic Designer for a large part of his 50- year professional career, he has drawn from his personal and huge reference files and created a series of ‘themed’ books, with a limited number of pages – but a huge number of examples – hence the BIG.
Formatted to A4 size each book is between 36-60 pages and has between 200-350 illustrations – ALL in full-colour. Full details can be seen on the website (below)
The books are pure picture books and carry almost no text whatsoever – leaving the posters to speak for themselves, as they would have done in their working lives. Although following broad historical sequence, they are presented first and foremost as a homage to extraordinarily talented artists, designers and illustrators who worked with pencils, paints, paper and brushes. As such there are no photographic works included, and the youngest example would have been produced in the 1970’s, whilst the majority cover the periods 1890 – 1950.
The series is ongoing but the following titles are currently available:
Old Auto Posters, Old Boat & Train Posters, Old Flight Posters, Old Drinks Posters, Old Cycling & Motorcycling Posters, Old Theatre Posters, WW1 Posters & Graphics, WW2 Posters.
All can be viewed and ordered on http://www.lulu.com/norman-clark , and are also available as immediate downloads.
