February 7, 2007 (Press Release) --
Dog grooming means maintaining of the cleanliness and appearance of the dog’s body, usually involving skin, hair, nails and teeth. In both humans and animals, grooming serves health related and social purposes.
Dog grooming considerations vary from breed to breed. Short –coated dogs usually need to be brushed once or twice a week, whereas long – haired dogs may need daily grooming to prevent the coat from matting or tangling. Dogs need only be bathed when dirty and the shampoo used should be one which protects the coat’s natural oils. Grooming also includes attending to the dog’s eyes, ears and anal glands, details of such care, however, should first be explained to the veterinarian.
Dog grooming is very important, not only for the appearance of the dog, but also for its health. The coat of your dog must be as clean and tidy as your hair is. But there are cases when dogs are stubborn and they refuse grooming. Some of them are very intelligent and if they don’t want it from the beginning, they can’t be influenced by tenderness, whispers, candies or other sweets. Suppose you take your dog to an expert dog groomer, but the dog keeps growling at the clippers and biting them or it even bites the groomer’s fingers.
There can be more solutions. First you have to check if the dog has the same negative attitude when you give it other commands. In this case it needs professional obedience training. Another solution might be to give the dog a sleeping pill, but only one recommended by the vet. However, there are situations when a dog has a curious reaction to such pills. For example, the dog could start coughing and breathing with difficulty and in the same time trying to bite. Maybe the dog is afraid of the noise or the grooming equipment causes an unpleasant sensation on its skin, as the clippers or the scissors may be cold. Or, the dog can’t stand the vibrations, or it doesn’t trust in people, or it may have an unhappy memory related to grooming. Besides, if the dog’s coat has too long hairs, grooming using scissors may take a long time and it may be very expensive.
Therefore, for this kind of dogs, which seem to have the sixth sense and predict all your movements and don’t allow you to do anything like washing or grooming, you as an owner need special grooming lessons or you have to take your dog to a groomer who is also expert in dogs behavior. Pet behavioral problems often arise as a result of attributing them human emotions. We treat our pets as members of our family. We invite them into our homes, feed and groom them and take them to the vet when they are not well, but we must respect them as species that are unique and amazingly different from us and from each other.
