February 9, 2007 (Press Release) --
A DNA test showing that Whoopi Goldberg had ancestors in Guinea-Bissau, one's of the world's poorest nations, has caused a stir here.
Leaders invited the Oscar winner to visit after she learned on the 2006 PBS special "African American Lives" that her genetic makeup is overwhelmingly Papel and Bayote, tribes indigenous to this West African country.
''She will come. She's Guinean. She's our daughter,'' said Tourism Minister Francisco Conduto de Pina.
But her publicist, Brad Cafarelli, said Goldberg has not received the letter. And he was not encouraging, citing the star's reluctance to fly and the demands of her live, daily radio show.
"It would not be possible for her to travel to West Africa in the foreseeable future,'' Cafarelli wrote in an e-mail.
