Information on the 1800�s Bohemian Solo Bass

The Double bass and bow used by Jonathon Kite are on loan from Mr. Bruce Hanson. This middle 1800�s Bohemian Bass has been Nanny-ised, aprocess of reshaping te instrument primarily by cutting dwn the upper bouts to help improve accessibility to the upper registers credited to French soloist Eduard Nanny. The bass, which is stamped �Curtis Institute� on the back button was imported from Europe by Anton Torello, a famous bass teacher of his era, and allegedly sold by Curtis to help pay staff salaries during the Great Depression. In 1987, Mr. Hanson aquired the bass frm James Vrhel, section bassist in the Chicago Symphony from 1944-1984. Mr. Vrhel puchased it in 1943 from Vaclave Jiskra, soloit and principal bassist of the Cicago Symphony from 1908-1949, who, according to the Chicago Tribune, performed the Bottesini Tarantella in Chicago on Christmas Day 1909. The Vigneron bass bow is a modern copy and compliments this instrument with a higher degree of finesse than the other two authentic Vignerons in Mr. Hanson�s collection.
