February 12, 2007 (Press Release) --
Daily Variety reports the slip became an industry wide controversy, especially since it’s apparently not true.
Sources quoted by Variety say Cohen has no deal on the table with Fox or anyone else for a Borat 2, and has said in other interviews that it would be nearly impossible to make a film like that again, since everyone knows his secret identity.
Murdoch’s statement is even more mysterious given the fact that Fox passed on Cohen’s upcoming project Bruno because, at $42 million, it was “too expensive”, and a Borat sequel would probably be much more, if only due to legal fees. Cohen’s camp says there have been casual discussions of a sequel, but no more.
News Corp spokesmen have since retracted Murdoch’s comment.
