Granite City School District #9 and Rich Township High School District #227 Replace Tape Backup Devices in Favor of Reliable Revinetix Solution

Granite City School District #9 and Rich Township High School District #227 are among the latest K-12 education environments switching from traditional tape backup to reliable disk-based solutions — to protect student records, course materials, electronic mailboxes, and other school information systems from the possibility of data loss.
With 4,300 students enrolled, Rich Township High School District #227 operates 18 computer servers running Windows and Netware® operating systems. Spread across its Central, East and South high school campus sites, Rich Township’s servers are used for student file management, DNS entries, SIF Zone Integration, Blackberry®, Microsoft Exchange®, Active Directory, and other applications.
Granite City School District #9 hosts 7,300 students at 10 different schools. At these facilities and its central administration office, the district relies on 17 network servers running Windows® 2003. These computers were traditionally backed-up with a tape auto-rotator system using Veritas® backup software.
“We used to use Veritas tape backup, and it was absolutely miserable,” said Zack Suhre, Director of Information Systems and Technology for Granite City School District #9. “We were completely dissatisfied. It seemed that we needed our own staff just to troubleshoot and work out the problems to implement backup with that. We have 11 buildings in the district, and we don’t really have a staff member assigned to each building, so the tapes were not getting rotated on a good schedule, and they failed a lot.”
“Tapes became a management nightmare for us, said Ted Koutavas, Director of Information Systems for Rich Township High School District #227. “The dilemma I had was how to back-up at each location. When you have staff members swapping out and rotating tapes, there are too many circumstances where data is not backed-up properly or regularly. There is nothing worse than to think you are backing up and yet you’re not.”
The Solution
