What does True Love really look like?
In a world filled with “lust, rust and dust” – where the Hollywood version of love is all that many people know and/or strive for - in a culture where those that have experienced disappointment and heartbreak are asking “What’s love got to do with it?” – can Valentine’s Day (February 14) still serve as a time to remind us of the real meaning of True Love?
Valentine's Day was probably imported into North America in the 19th century by British settlers. But in the midst of all the flowers and chocolates, the stuffed animals and expensive dinners, the jewelry, the hugs and the kisses – in the midst of all these expressions of affection, it may well be that in order to understand what True Love really is we can draw a few points from an ancient and reliable source.
1. True Love suffers long – it puts up with and perseveres long with people, it is slow to lose patience, it sees hope in people, and does not give up on people quickly
2. True Love is kind – it is useful, helpful, and friendly – it takes time to be nice, and looks for ways to be constructive and gracious
3. True Love does not envy – it never boils over with jealousy, and is not possessive or controlling with relationships, information, or things in general
4. True Love does not vaunt itself -- it is not anxious to impress, it makes no parade, it is never boastful, and it never “drops names” or makes a display of its own worth
5. True Love is not puffed up – it does not put on airs, it is not arrogant or conceited, and it does not cherish inflated ideas of its own importance
6. True Love does not behave itself unseemly – it is not rude or unmannerly, it knows how to act in good form and taste and how to be best suited for a time or place
7. True Love seeks not its own – it does not pursue selfish aims, and it does not always have to have its own way
8. True Love is not easily provoked – it is not irritable, touchy, or quick to take offense
9. True Love thinks no evil – it does not keep score of wrongs or hold grudges, it is not resentful, and it does not mentally condemn others
10. True Love does not rejoice in iniquity – it does not gloat over or in the sins of others, and it takes no pleasure in wrongdoing
11. True Love rejoices in the truth – it rejoices when truth emerges, and when truth prevails
12. True Love bears all things – it can overlook faults, is always slow to expose, and it is loyal no matter what the cost
13. True Love believes all things – it is always eager to believe the best, it is not suspicious, and there is no end to its trust
14. True Love hopes all things – it is fadeless in hope, it does not give up on people, and it is not discouraged easily
15. True Love endures all things – it is constant under pressure
In summary – True Love is much more than a feeling. True Love is an action – a choice that we make. True Love will keep you moving in the midst of life’s greatest difficulties. And True Love never fails.
