February 14, 2007 (Press Release) --
This may be the first you hear of Afterworld, but by no means will it be the last. The Hollywood Reporter indicates Sony Pictures Television International is planning to turn Afterworld into a multiple-format cross-platform empire.
At its core, Afterworld is an animated, futuristic dystopian sci-fi series of 130 two-minute episodes. The storyline, created by Emmy nominated producer Stan Rogow, and Brent Friedman, one of the creators of Mortal Kombat 2, takes place on our earth after an unexplained global event that has left 99% of the world’s population missing. Additionally, the event has rendered all technology useless.
The main character has awakened after the event in nearly deserted New York City, and attempts to make his way to Seattle in hopes of finding his wife and child still there. The series will be one of the backbones of BudTV, Budweiser’s new online entertainment network.
But Afterworld will be hard to escape. Sony plans to spin it out through regular television, the web, wireless mobile media, platform gaming and just about any other medium they can reach. The core for Afterworld followers will be Afterworld.com, which will provide back episodes, supporting materials, blogs, interactive content, online games, and of course, advertising.
The announcement came Tuesday in Barcelona at the 3GSM World Congress in. Sony’s Marie Jacobsen says it’s a big opportunity to harness the ever increasing distribution possibilities of new media in one effort: "This is an excellent opportunity for SPTI to cross stream content across our international mobile, digital and cable outlets and an ideal multiplatform offering for global and regional sponsors.
It's new for us because we are focusing all of our content production in one area, which allows us to concentrate all our efficiencies. We have the opportunity with this project to lock into different subsets of consumers -- we are chasing an aggregate audience." They’re chasing you. Be warned.
