The fact that is designed by esteemed architect Frank Gehry came as a pleasant surprise. Gehry developed Cloud as a homage to the sculptural work of Isamu Noguchi and was initially constructed out of deformed paper cups stapled together, another factor that made the judges smile. Due to safety reasons a more practical alternative was selected: a multiply refined polyester. With its fibrous appearance it looks just like paper, giving the lamp an appealing, ephemeral quality.

Frank Gehry likes to use unusual materials for his architecture and furniture and with the furniture series "Easy Edges" from 1972 he succeeded in lending such everyday material as cardboard a new aesthetic dimension.
