The Student Loan Network, publisher of the Financial Aid Podcast, announced on Valentine's Day the beta release of WinAmpCast, a PHP script designed to help podcasters expand their audience reach to owners of the popular WinAmp MP3 software.
Christopher Penn, host of the Financial Aid Podcast and SLN Chief Technology Officer, said, "One-click iTunes changed podcasting for the better, but there are still a large number of people who have other MP3 audio software out there who don't have iTunes. iTunes also suffers from the perception that it's only for use with an iPod. WinAmpCast will help podcasters everywhere reach WinAmp's 57 million users."
Mr. Penn continued, "WinAmp, though a fine audio player, lacks robust support for podcasts, including one-click subscribe. WinAmpCast transforms a standard RSS feed into an M3U playlist that can be streamed to any MP3 software which supports the M3U format, including WinAmp and iTunes."
"There are some organizations and corporations which explicitly ban the installation of iTunes, but WinAmp is pervasive on the desktop. WinAmpCast will help podcasters reach those audiences."
WinAmpCast is available for free under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.5 License. It is currently in beta, and is available for download at the Financial Aid Podcast web site.
