February 16, 2007 (Press Release) --
LOS ANGELES, CA, 02/12/2007 – Ten years ago, a teenage girl wielding a wooden stake won the hearts of a generation of fans, and made a lasting impact on popular culture and the entertainment industry.
BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (abbreviated as BtVS by its fans) premiered March 10th, 1997 and is ranked among TV Guide’s “50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time.”
The acclaimed American TV series, created by writer-director Joss Whedon, helped put the fledgling WB Network on the entertainment industry map, with a hip, witty drama about a perky high-school student chosen to be a “Slayer” – a “Chosen One” who uses her wit, courage and special powers to fight the forces of darkness.
The show’s storylines provided wry observations on adolescent struggles with a feminist viewpoint. The show has become such a part of the cultural landscape that academics have presented it a serious topic of study. Over twenty books, hundreds of articles, and untold numbers of online discussion forums have examined the show’s stories, themes and characters. A new generation of television and film writers, directors, and producers have cited BtVS as a major influence in their work. Fans of the show readily note that the show has made a significant impact on their lives.
In tribute to the show’s creator, fans have launched an effort to give Joss Whedon a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The online site at
http://star4whedon.whedonversefansunited.org/index.html hopes to raise $25,000 and donate additional funds to charity.
