February 17, 2007 (Press Release) --
Manama Textile Mills, based in Bahrain, is the largest textile group in the Middle East. It was founded in 1995, initially as a weaving mill. Subsequently, spinning units were added and today the company has three weaving units and two spinning operations. Until recently, Manama was concerned primarily with the production and export of greige (unfinished) fabrics and yarns. But in 2004 it started to put in place a series of forward integration measures aimed at producing fully finished textiles and made-up garments. The company’s target is to increase export sales from US$100 mn in 2004 to US$250 mn by 2007 and to systematically increase profits. The investment plan has been spurred on by the signing of the US-Bahrain Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in September 2004. The FTA provides for duty-free treatment in the US market for textile products made in Bahrain from materials which have also been spun, woven and finished in the country or in the USA. A similar agreement is being negotiated with the EU.
