February 21, 2007 (Press Release) --
Recent economic, technological, social and political developments have led to the increasing importance of consumer policy. Society has been revolutionised and consumer expectations transformed and as a result, consumer policy must evolve. Whilst consumer law and policy of the EU has begun to adapt to these changes, progress must continue to be made. This is the advice delivered by consumer law expert, Debra Holland, in an in-depth report on the impact of European consumer law on the marketplace. European Consumer Law examines the existing system of consumer law in the EU and compares the various EU Regulations and Directives with the international objectives put forward in the United Nations Guidelines on Consumer Protection. In addiltion, the report considers the future of both European and international consumer law. Within the UN Guidelines, five rights essential for consumer protection have been identified. They are: the right to safety and health, the right to redress, the right to protection of economic interest, the right to representation, and the right to information and education. Through European Consumer Law, Holland provides clear, structured and accurate interpretation, examining the various Regulations and Directives against the backdrop of international goals recognised by the UN.
