We don’t want to fight autism. We want to work with it. Let’s stop ridiculing people for their differences and start celebrating them for their uniqueness.

Dix Hills, NY - February 22, 2007 – Autism is not just bad behavior. “I’m so tired of people staring at me like I’m a bad mother.” says Maria of New York
“I don’t know what I fear most, my 9 year old having a tantrum in the store or everybody’s stares and remarks” says Emily of Port Washington.
“We end up living in little autism communities” says Joe of Long Island. “Every family we socialize with has at least one child on the autism spectrum. This way, we don’t get judged, our kids don’t get taunted and we try and pretend that life is great.”
This is no way to live. Parents should be able to mix freely in society without judgment. Children with autism should not be excluded and restricted from activities. Summer camps should accommodate children on the autism spectrum by having extra staff.
Currently, 1 in 150 children are diagnosed with autism. Why aren’t people more tolerant? When is it going to change? With the tremendous efforts in autism awareness many parents were hopeful that society would be more accepting. However, some think it’s created the opposite effect. It appears that society now says “OK, we recognize that Autism is a wide spread disability. We’re going to help fight it.”
“We don’t want to fight autism. We want to work with it” says Jene Aviram, who partners in a special education company, Natural Learning Concepts. “We believe every child with Autism is phenomenal. They might appear strange to society but they have a wealth of talent and abilities that most of us could never tap into. If people took the time to look past their behavior, they would find that people with autism are truly remarkable”.
In fact, Jene Aviram started putting actual comments on her website that parents had posted. These talents and abilities are so inspiring that the website gets thousands of hits. There are children that can recite the presidents backwards and forwards after reading it once, children who’ve memorized every zip code in the USA and children with excellent physical abilities.
