February 25, 2007 (Press Release) --
"Right now there is a fascination with girls going wild," Brewer says. "All the headlines are about girls going out and not wearing underwear and ending up in rehab. These girls are on the cover of Newsweek. I can't help, but think, 'This is my movie.'"
Well, not exactly, unless someone chains Britney to a sink. In "Black Snake Moan," the deep South is the setting, and Samuel L. Jackson is a man who chains up a wild girl (Christina Ricci) to the radiator in his house to set her straight.
1. Was Christina Ricci chained with a real metal chain or did you use a special plastic stunt chain?
Christina wouldn't let me use the stunt chain. During one scene where she's yanking on a chain, it's a 60-pound chain. Her fingers were blistered. But she's a trouper. There were days when we were trying out chains. I gave her five different ones and she even chose the padlock. The day I'll never forget is when she came out on the set in a cropped, Confederate flag shirt, white panties and chained. The whole crew froze like, "Oh God, we're really going to do this." By the way, I also would go pick up my little boy at preschool during this time. My son saw dailies of Sam Jackson in my movie and talked about it at school. One day his teacher asked me, "Mr. Brewer, we heard Frozone has a girl on a chain?"
2. What will women make out of this film?
The misogynist word will be thrown in my face and some will think I have a hatred of women. Please. I don't believe women should be shackled. I'm just doing a movie about the blues and the tension that happens in a house where you see a very big, muscular, black man and this tiny, young, white girl. You don't need to mix in too much more to get people tense. This movie terrifies us and titillates us at the same time. But the message with the chain is we all need some kind of peace and occasionally we all need to be snapped back. I'm certainly not advocating chaining up women.
3. So the message here about the man who chains a young girl is ...
It's really a father-daughter movie. It's about unconditional love; accepting one's faults and sins. Sam Jackson's character is not thinking about sex. He's just trying to be a good father to this girl and help her. This is a man whose wife just dumped him. His pride is wounded. He's got this captive woman and some sh-- to say.

Craig Brewer is moaning. The director of "Black Snake Moan" -- a film about a sexed up girl gone nuts -- knows his film is a bit topical.
