February 26, 2007 (Press Release) --
After iTunes or Amazon Unbox, now you can rent a movie or a TV show from a new digital store. BitTorrent, the company behind the notorious file-sharing software, is the latest competitor on the online video market. BitTorrent will launch a download site, called the BitTorrent Entertainment Network, that will distribute more than 5,000 titles from digital movies and TV shows licensed from the studios.
According to AP, TV episodes are $1.99 to download to own and BitTorrent Entertainment Network will rent movies for a 24-hour viewing period for $3.99 for new titles and $2.99 for older films. After downloading a TV show or a movie the customers will have up to one month to watch it, but once they started to view a title, they must finish it in the next 24 hours. The video content offered on BitTorrent Entertainment Network is protected by Windows Media DRM and will only play back using Windows Media Player.
In November 2006, BitTorrent, announced a slate of partnerships with a wide variety of leading film and television companies such as 20th Century Fox, G4, Kadokawa Pictures USA, Lionsgate, MTV Networks (including COMEDY CENTRAL, Logo, MTV: Music Television, MTV2, Nickelodeon, Nicktoons Network, SpikeTV, The N, TV Land and VH1), Palm Pictures, Paramount Pictures and Starz Media.
Also in May 2006, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group announced an agreement with BitTorrent to leverage the company's peer-assisted delivery system for the electronic sell through of motion picture and television content in the United States.
BitTorrent was designed in 2001 to be an effective publication tool for large files on the Web. With the launch of BitTorrent's search engine in 2005, BitTorrent.com became a place for publishers to showcase their content and consumers to find and download content in one convenient location
