February 28, 2007 (Press Release) --
3GSM World Congress 2007, BARCELONA, Spain, February 13, 2007 – Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN) today announced that Nuance Voice Control, a mobile search and messaging service powered by speech technology, is now available for the BlackBerry® Pearl™ from Research In Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM). Nuance will demonstrate the new mobile functionality in Hall 2, Booth 2H48 (Nuance) and Hall 8, Booth 8B56 (Research In Motion) at the 3GSM World Congress 2007, being held this week in Barcelona, Spain.
Nuance speech-enables advanced smartphone features in the BlackBerry Pearl such as creating calendar entries, dialing a contact, playing music, obtaining driving directions, and searching the Web for business listings, news, weather, stock quotes, sport scores and more. Users can also dictate email messages and have them instantly transcribed on their smartphone, ready to send. The application does not require training, so most users can be up and running within minutes.
“The majority of attorneys at our firm are BlackBerry users, and we've found that the BlackBerry Pearl is one of the most user-friendly devices on the market,” said Jay Clark, member attorney, Wallace Jordan Ratliff & Brandt, LLC. “Nuance Voice Control eliminates manual entry for emails and appointments, and it streamlines Web browsing. Plus Nuance Narrator delivers audio read-out of incoming emails. With these services on the BlackBerry Pearl we can be more efficient and productive – even when we're on the go.”
Nuance Voice Control functionality available for the BlackBerry Pearl includes the following:
Dictate Text Messages and Emails: Sending an email is as simple as saying it. Users can send emails to any email address stored in their contact list by saying the contact’s name followed by the subject and body text. This hands-free access to email can be an invaluable feature for mobile workers who need to send messages from the field, as well as drivers who need to stay focused on the road.
Speech-Based Web Search: Nuance Voice Control provides single-button access to the wealth of information available on the Web. Users can access specific Web sites by stating the name of the site they want to reach. Checking the weather, stock quotes or sports scores is as simple as speaking a request. For example, users can say, “Stock quote: NUAN,” to check a stock price. For general Web search, users simply speak their request, such as “Web search: how tall is the Empire State Building?”
Voice-Controlled MP3 Player: Nuance Voice Control allows users to control the built-in MP3 player by voice, making it even easier for BlackBerry Pearl users to select a song and enjoy their favorite music and videos on the go. Users simply say “play” and then name the song title, genre or artist.
Voice-Controlled Driving Directions: Nuance Voice Control brings BlackBerry Maps to a new level of convenience. With voice destination entry, speech recognition eliminates the time-consuming task of keying in street or city names. Users simply push one button and speak a destination point to the Voice Control service. Directions are then displayed on the handset’s screen using the BlackBerry Maps application.
Email and SMS Reader: Nuance Voice Control can be combined with Nuance Narrator, a service that enables incoming email messages on a BlackBerry Pearl to automatically be read aloud to users through the handset’s speakerphone, a wireless headset or hands-free car kit.
“The BlackBerry Pearl is a feature-rich handset in a small, elegant package,” said Michael Thompson, vice president and general manager, telco, search and communications, Nuance. “Speech is a natural interface and the Nuance Voice Control service complements the BlackBerry Pearl’s intuitive user interface by delivering additional voice access to key handset functionality. Users press one button on the smartphone to open infinite possibilities: effortlessly navigating a large music collection, quickly conducting Web searches, dictating emails, having incoming mail read aloud, and more.”
“Users value the convenience and productivity that services like Nuance Voice Control add to the BlackBerry mobile experience,” said Jeff McDowell, vice president, global alliances, Research In Motion. “We are pleased to be working with Nuance to provide greater flexibility and value for our customers.”
