March 11, 2007 (Press Release) --
If you’re like me, you tend to notice those films where a writer-director goes a little overboard in the opening credits to remind us of the expansive nature of his or her contributions to what we’re about to see (E.g., A Film By… Edited By… Music By… Written By… Directed By…).
And if you’ve ever wondered what this narcissistic title card tendency would feel like if it was carried out to its logical extreme, look no further than the gag trailer for the new comedy Homo Erectus, put together by actor-writer-director Adam Rifkin and ringer Matt Potter.
There are just under a 100 different Rifkin credits that swoop across the YouTube screen, starting out with the normal stuff and then quickly segueing to things like “Welding Done By,” “Babies Nursed By” and “Mob Bossing By.”
You may well recognize Rifkin’s name as the screenwriter of such family fare as Mousehunt, Small Soldiers and last year’s Zoom. Potter, meanwhile, has been working as an editor for the last five years at Kevin Smith’s View Askew Productions, a gig which helped bring him to the attention of Rifkin.

Potter has posted more than a half-dozen other clips for Homo Erectus on YouTube, from straight excerpts to additional parody items like a faux rap music video responsible for this blog item’s curious title (a stutter step beginning holds on “Adam Rifkin is a Homo,” before then adding the word Erectus).
In what is an essential move for this kind of effort, Rifkin has managed to sprinkle in a slice of the Surreal Life to his cast, with the likes of Gary Busey, Talia Shire, David Carradine, porn star Ron Jeremy and gay caveman Tom Arnold joining him on screen. The gags appear to come fast and furious and, if you ask me, there can never be too much goofy comedy these dark days.
It doesn’t stop there. If you go to the film’s official website CavemanComedy.com, they have gone to the further trouble of inserting another character – the near-naked Old Fool (Bill Tyree) - into Hollywood flicks such as King Kong and The Breakfast Club.
Homo Erectus is both a shining example of guerilla marketing and a reminder of the difference between the Sundance and Slamdance Film Festivals (it was only an official selection at the latter).
Who knows if this Austin, Texas-shot flick will find a distributor or go straight to video. But if you want to check out a “time when Homo had a whole different meaning,” all aforementioned videos and more are handily available via the YouTube channel theadamrifkinshow.
