March 15, 2007 (Press Release) --
Freshman Senator Claire McCaskill, Missouri (D),
St. Louis Mayor, Francis Slay, Kansas City Mayor, Kay Barnes and St.Ann, Missouri Mayor, Carrie Cafazza have stepped aboard to assist the more than 3,000 unemployed former TWA Flight Attendants, who are currently layed off from American Airlines after the AA/TWA acquisition and the events of 9/11.
These high profile politicians are indeed politically correct in supporting these furloghed flight attendants, obtain extension of recall rights from American Airlines.
American Airlines purchased TWA, years ago and layed off every single TWA Flight Attendant after the events of 9/11. Now these layed off Flight Attendants are systematically being terminated and severed from American Airlines, because their contractual recall rights of 5 years are expiring.
AA Flight Attendant Union, APFA, Association of Professional Flight Attendants, has not been persistant enough or successful in obtaining the extension of recall rights for these 3,000 plus group of flight attendants.
American Airlines is not interested in extending the recall rights of this group of employees either.
What to do??
Layed off 18 year veteran St. Louis based flight attendant Roger Graham, has obtained support and is building a coalition of polititions to assist him and his colleagues in getting American Airlines and the APFA unions attention.
Graham states "We have lost our jobs and our now being terminated. We would like to have the ability to return to our former jobs as the American Airlines continues to return to profitability. Not one single former TWA flight attendant has a job, the APFA Union blames it on the Airline and American Airlines Executives blame the impasse on the APFA Union".
Enter, high profile Missouri politicians. "Missouri is the poster child for airline acquisitions gone bad" states Graham. No one knows that better than freshman Senator Claire McCaskill. The majority of the unemployed were once employed in her great state of Missouri.
Now Missouri Mayors, Slay, Barnes and Cafazza are also urging American Airlines and the APFA Union to sit down and work out extending the recall of these former TWA workers.
Senator Claire McCaskill had the opportunity to speak to her capital hill political friends at a Senate Commerce Hearing about Aviation consolidation in January. McCaskill had information and statistics to give the Commerce Committee about these unemployed former TWA, now AA flight attendants. Those statistics included high percentages of no health insurance, no replacement of jobs, drained savings and 401k and IRA usage by this group.
"It appears that the United States Senators had no idea what happened to us, the former TWA flight attendants, after they gave American Airlines fast track approval to acquire TWA. We are now building a coalition to help us negotiate and retain our right to remain on the recall list and not be terminated. We could use their help" states Graham.
