A WORD ABOUT “STERLING PLACE”
BY MARY GLADUE
SENIOR EDITOR
I had the privilege of editing Mr. Ray Garcia’s book “Sterling Place” a true story that is both timely and compelling.
As a young man, Mr. Garcia witnessed one of the most horrific air accidents in history, the December 16, 1960, midair crash of TWA 266 and United Airlines flight 826 over New York City. This event has haunted him throughout his life. It let him to become a pilot and ultimately, to write his story. The device he uses is clever one.
Based on interviews he interweaves the lives of several of the passengers and their families leading up to the crash. His writing is very visual, so the book reads almost like a screenplay. The people he chose to follow are engrossing and the reader is drawn quickly into their lives and the tragedy that ensues.
But that is just part of the value of Mr. Garcia’s book. This is not just a gory disaster story. It is also a story of investigation, as he accumulated hundreds of hours reviewing all available documentation. He became increasingly dissatisfied with the official report for the midair collision. Guided by his experience and expertise as a pilot, Mr. Garcia provides compelling evidence that the real story has remained buried… until now.
This is a must read story, and I encourage you to take time to read it. I think the possibilities for it will be obvious.

On the morning of December 16,1960, a TWA constellation aircraft, and United DC-8 jetliner, collided in a blinding snow storm over New York. Was it "pilot error", or a cover-up.
