State Generates Substantial Costs Savings by Standardizing on Symantec AntiVirus

Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) announced that the state of Missouri has standardized on Symantec’s desktop security solutions to improve the protection of the state’s desktop environment. The Missouri state government has centralized IT procurement and has implemented Symantec AntiVirus desktop protection for 50,000 seats across 14 departments, resulting in estimated cost savings of $836,000 over three years.
“Symantec allows us to offer our state a high level of protection at a great price-performance value,” says Dan Ross, chief information officer, Missouri Information Technology Services Division. “Within two years we expect to receive a 100 percent payback from using Symantec technology and plan to reinvest those savings in other critical areas of the IT infrastructure. This agreement is being used as a model of success throughout our consolidation.”
The state of Missouri has implemented Symantec AntiVirus on government desktops in 100 locations throughout the state to secure its critical information, while preventing malicious code from compromising sensitive information and protecting its networks from future intrusions and abuse. In addition to Symantec AntiVirus, portions of the state government also use Symantec Mail Security, Gateway Security, Ghost Solution Suite, pcAnywhere, and Backup Exec. The sophisticated nature of today’s information security threats requires governments to protect themselves beyond the desktop as well. Using Symantec AntiVirus for Handhelds, the state of Missouri’s House of Representatives secures data from malicious threats targeting its mobile devices.
The state of Missouri IT infrastructure supports the systems that serve the state’s 5.8 million citizens and approximately 60,000 government employees. To drive efficiency, the state has centralized IT personnel and functions for 14 of 16 state departments within the Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) of the Office of Administration.
“Consolidating IT resources has enabled us to effectively manage IT budget decreases of up to 25 percent during the last three years—without sacrificing our ability to keep pace with the increasing demand for new IT services and upgrades,” says Ross. “By eliminating the duplication of government services and centralizing IT administration, the state of Missouri is saving millions of dollars and precious staff resources.
