Paul Bratslavsky (Superkids-Karate.com), black belt in Tae kwon do and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu coach now incorporates key self-defense techniques from jiu-jitsu into the children's already extensive curriculum. “Jiu-jitsu, a martial art created to favor the 'little guy' offers too many essential defense strategies to ignore the benefit it will have on children,” says Bratslavsky. “The combination of Tae kwon do and jiu-jitsu is the perfect blend for children's self-defense”. Tae kwon do gives the kids the knowledge of striking, improving kid's speed, flexibility, and power. Jiu-jitsu, developed by the warrior class of the Samurai over 1000 years ago in Japan, allows the children to feel comfortable and safe in situations involving grappling. Both arts give children confidence while instilling them with values such as respect, patience, and a sense of right and wrong. “I love teaching the kids jiu-jitsu on top of the Tae kwon do,” says assistant instructor Billy Pola. “The kids love the sweeps that are in jiu-jitsu, whenever Mr. B demonstrates a throw on me they all laugh and burst with excitement”. The children at SuperKids-Karate West Hartford are very fortunate to have such a special opportunity to train in both Tae kwon do and Jiu-jitsu, the advantages these children now have are countless.
