March 21, 2007 (Press Release) --
Bruce Fealk, a Democratic activist who has Congressman Joe Knollenberg in his sights, has started using the power of the Internet to shine the light on Joe Knollenberg’s record. Fealk, along with a handful of bloggers, are taking on the powerful Congressman. Fealk will appear at the Troy Democratic Club tonight at 7 p.m. as part of a presentation Online Activism: The Future of Michigan's Democratic Process at the Troy Community Center Room 302.
Knollenberg’s district is a quiet and relatively affluent suburb just North of Detroit, Michigan. The neighborhoods are filled with auto workers and executives. The auto industry’s economic woes is expected to carry-over into the elections in 2008, which may result in voter discontent with incumbents like Knollenberg.
“We may not have thousands of dollars for billboards, but we have the truth on our side and our goal is to retire Joe Knollenberg, Oakland county deserves a representative that listens and really represents them in Congress.” Fealk said. Knollenberg has refused to meet with constituents concerned with the war in Iraq and warrantless wiretaps.
Fealk is a regular poster at www.votenoonjoe.blogspot.com, a website that is reporting on Knollenberg’s voting record in Congress as well as his public statements and positions. Fealk has even started his own web site, www.RetireJoeKnollenberg.com . His goal is to raise money for the Democratic candidate, even before the candidate is known. One way he’s doing that is to hold “retirement parties.” The first Hawaii Joe Retirement Party is scheduled for April 1 at Fealk’s house.
Fealk even started his own community television show and was featured in a recent profile article in a local newspaper. Although the television show doesn’t focus on Knollenberg, it does focus on getting out the progressive message. His first show featured two Democratic Oakland County commissioners, Tim Greimel, a freshman commissioner, and Dave Coulter, head of the Democratic Caucus. The TV show can be seen at www.michiganprogress.blogspot.com.
Fealk also said to look for bumper stickers and lawn signs to pop up on Oakland county streets and lawns soon, pointing people to the www.RetireJoeKnollenberg.com web site. Another anti-Knollenberg website, www.knollenberg.org, popped up on the internet recently, making the anti-Knollenberg websites outnumber the sites that support the Congressman. (The only sites supporting him right now are his own official House.gov site and his re-election site.)
“We don’t want voters to have to rely on the candidate’s ads when deciding who to vote for”, said Fealk. “Voters shouldn’t have to rely on newspaper ads and 30 second television commercials to make up their minds. Knollenberg has money to burn in his Congressional campaign. We want to make sure they have real information on the candidate’s positions and voting record before they walk into the polling booth.”
