March 21, 2007 (Press Release) --
There has been much news about the House and the Senate's related discovery process on the firings of eight federal prosecutors by the Bush administration.
It has escalated to a showdown between Senator Patrick Leahy who wants testimony under oath by White House staff and the President offering the alternative of an informal meet.
No matter if we consider it correct that White House representatives such as Karl Rove should be under oath, or that President George Bush prefers non-binding informal conversations, it should not be necessary for Senator Patrick Leahy to have to subpoena White House representatives, nor should it be necessary for George Bush to try to exercise Executive Privilege. It ultimately becomes a matter of unnecessary cost and overhead in our government.
When the branches of government do not work together in transparent and accountable manner in the first place, they are accomplishing no more than tolerating each other at tax payer expense.
In other words, although Constitutional confrontation is healthy for our nation to test the checks and balances between the powers of government, its cost is paid for by the tax payer for accomplishing no more than just putting the branches of government in order.
So the question becomes, what really in fact is 'Big Government' if not the overhead of costs derived from the contention between the branches of government as opposed to them being able to do the business of and for the people?
By having Transparency and Accountability in Government, and the true regard of the people enables the United States to embrace the needs of the people. Constitutional confrontation then becomes about the matters of the people, and not the legitimacy of one branch of government over another. Hence the people are served by their elected representatives.
To establish a transparent and accountable administration that works with both the House and the Senate, then the House and the Senate are obliged to do the same. Hence efficiency and cost effective government can be achieved where policy and legislative action can take on measurable significance for the benefit of the people. In working together, political capital is ultima
tely gained between the branches of Government, where no longer is it a matter of tolerance, but becomes a valued and verifiable trust in doing the work for and of the people.
