March 22, 2007 (Press Release) --
A dozen different actresses have played British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher over the years, everyone from the flatteringly cast Gretta Scacchi in the 2002 BBC TV Movie Jeffrey Archer: The Truth to Canadian actress Camilla Scott in the CBS TV series Due South. But the success of The Queen has seemingly ensured that a thirteenth and perhaps most prominent actress will soon join the Iron Lady hit parade.
Like The Queen, the new project being put together by the BBC and Pathe focuses on a narrow band of political crisis. According to Daily Variety, the planned film will focus on a critical period of 17 days before the beginning of the Falkland Islands war in 1982. Thatcher, then an unpopular Prime Minister, made some decisions about the invasion of the British-held principality that quickly changed her own political fortunes.
Damian Jones, producer of The History Boys is behind the project along with screenwriter Brian Fillis. But the immediate question becomes: if offered the role, should Helen Mirren accept yet another 10 Downing Street shaded opportunity, or should she let it rest with her portrayal of Elizabeth II?
Thatcher was 57 at the time of the incidents to be portrayed in the film. And while Mirren can do no wrong when it comes to British ladies of power, we have another suggestion – Annette Bening. She’s a tad younger than 57, but with some Hollywood make-up and wig magic, her resemblance to the PM could be solid. And as her Oscar nominated performance in Being Julia proved, she can definitely handle the accent.
