My research found that the idea for Earth Day was born in 1962 right here in the United States. Over the next seven years, Senator Gaylord Nelson, the founder of Earth Day, developed the concept along with support from President Kennedy and others. They were not content with the fact that the state of the environment was a non-issue in our country�s politics, and this very fact would demand a lot of hard work and perseverance to take the idea to reality. In 1969, the large reach of the anti-Vietnam War demonstrations actually gave Nelson the idea to organize a huge grassroots protest over what was happening in our environment.
