March 28, 2007 (Press Release) --
The Chicago-based discount travel Web site is on ice -- where its purchased placement will be seen in the Will Ferrell flick "Blades of Glory," opening Friday.
In the movie, Orbitz is the title sponsor of the World Winter Sports Games in which Ferrell's character and a partner, played by "Napoleon Dynamite's" Jon Heder, compete.
The company gets plenty of screen time during the climactic scene, said Sandra Oi, director of brand marketing. The fictional title sponsorship gives the Web site a logo presence on the rink boards and in the ice.
The prospective of the broad reach of a Ferrell movie made the placement an easy sell when DreamWorks studio came calling, Oi said.
Ferrell's 2006 "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" nabbed $47 million at the box office its opening weekend and has made more than $148 million so far. His 2004 "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" pulled in $28.4 million on opening weekend and about $85 million total.
Orbitz employees -- there are about 1,000 in Chicago -- will see a screening of "Blades" tonight at AMC River East 21.
