BPI Announces First Sales of Next-Generation TISSUEscope ™
BPI Announces First Sales of Next-Generation TISSUEscope ™
The first sales of automated panoramic imaging system to provide both brightfield and fluorescence virtual slides in 3-D without tiling
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) March 30, 2007 --
Waterloo, ON, March 30, 2007: Biomedical Photometrics Inc. (BPI) announces today sales and shipments of the next-generation TISSUEscope™ to early customers, marking the first official placements of the new instrument. The first customers of BPI’s next-generation TISSUEscope™, to be launched broadly later this year, include the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center (SHSC) in Toronto, Canada and the Robarts Research Institute (RRI) in London, Canada.
The sales follow continuing collaborations with these and other leading healthcare, imaging and pharma research organizations. SHSC, previously announced as the independent test site for the first TISSUEscope™ prototype, completed the purchase of an Alpha instrument in February 2006 and have now purchased and received a second unit. Field testing of TISSUEscope™ Beta instruments commenced in June 2006 in conjunction with organizations in the US and Canada, including both RRI and SHSC. 10-15X speed-up in throughput over existing digitization methods was achieved during field testing of the TISSUEscope™ at RRI in vascular, pulmonary and oncology applications.
The TISSUEscope™ uses BPI’s patented panoramic MACROscope® technology to produce a high-resolution digital image of the entire tissue specimen in a single scan without the time consuming process of tiling 1000’s of images. The resulting virtual slide is stored in a single digital file, enabling low and high-resolution images of the entire tissue specimen to be easily displayed, manipulated, distributed and interpreted. In addition to brightfield imaging, the TISSUEscope™ has the high sensitivity necessary to simultaneously view tissue specimens using several other contrast mechanisms including fluorescence. Fluorescence is a growing requirement for advanced quantitative molecular imaging needed by research pathologists for detecting cancers and monitoring treatment. Specimen images that require multiple contrast mechanisms that may take hours to produce with image tiling processes can now be done with the TISSUEscope™ in minutes. Further, the confocal characteristic of the TISSUEscope™ also allows for optical sectioning and construction of 3-D virtual slides.
No other virtual microscopy imaging technology combines simultaneous acquisition and manipulation of registered brightfield and fluorescence images, panoramic field-of-view (more than 100 times that of a standard microscope on an area basis), the ability to capture the entire image in a single scan, and confocal imaging capability in one instrument.
