"U. S. native people go hungry in Virginia"

April 1, 2007 -- CENTENNIAL, CO -- While U. S. Congress legislates U. S. taxpayer's money to pay for feeding people in other countries, U. S. native people go hungry in Virginia. Award-winning writer/filmmaker Donald L. Vasicek learned about this activity while screening his film, "The Sand Creek Massacre", at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia on March 28, 2007. Discussing filmmaking and native films with student filmmakers after the screening, one student filmmaker told Vasicek that his class project is making a film about a Cherokee man who comes to a grocery store where he works.

The young man said, "He shows up every night just after closing. We give him left over food that we can no longer sell. He takes it to his people so that they can eat. This grocery store is their only source for food." According to Vasicek, the young man added, "Yeah, they're going to throw a party with a big bonfire for me. Isn't that cool?"

Vasicek said, "It is time for all Americans to take stock and look at our native people. They should be priority. Their ancestors lived in this country before our ancestors lived in this country. I've been homeless. I've been hungry. I've been cold. My life was at stake. I know. We must help out our native people before we lose them. The continuation of Colonizing/Americanising/Genocide via video games, movies, etc. , poverty, hunger, racism, alcohol and drug abuse are destroying them. If we lose them, we lose the roots, the essence of American history, our native people. Is that acceptable to you? How would you feel if your people were in danger of extermination?"

Vasicek's web site, http://www.donvasicek.com, provides detailed information about the Sand Creek Massacre including various still images particularly on the Sand Creek Massacre home page and on the proposal page.
