April 3, 2007 (Press Release) --
"It's all good," the new WCKG-FM (105.9) host said at the start of his first air shift in three years. He repeated the phrase, consciously, several times thereafter.
"This is the new home. I'm not crazy," he insisted, tongue audibly in cheek. "I know some of you think I am. I sincerely am Santa Claus. No, I'm the Easter Bunny. No, I'm William the Conqueror. That's what I am. I'm the king of England! I'm not crazy."
He went on to thank his agent-wife "for getting the deal done."
The former high-salaried second banana of Roe Conn and Steve Dahl (now his stationmate) took an extended and much-dissected breather in 2004 when contract talks broke down with his last employer, WLS-AM (890). But as leading man -- a role he played unsuccessfully in the past -- he had his internal amp understandably cranked to 11.
With sidekick Jim Turano in a Hawaiian shirt meant to evoke the (not-always-so) good ol' Dahl days, Meier bounced from subject to subject -- Opening Day, his recent near-decapitation on the Dan Ryan, the alleged proclivities of Danny Thomas -- like a newly unsealed racquetball.
"I'm Catholic, so being off work is not acceptable ...," he said toward the end of hour one, with two more to go in his 8 to 11 a.m. broadcast. "Otherwise, I would have been really enjoying the three years [off]. It was a luxury to have three years off, believe me.
"I'm so rested and ready," he added. "My engines are all retooled and I'm ready to go."
