April 3, 2007 (Press Release) --
The technology, being pioneered by UK-based company ServiceTec, not only scans passports, tickets and visas, but also automatically recognises the type of document, “going,” says the firm’s strategic products director Roger Eden, “one step beyond recognition to actual understanding”.
Dubbed PassPortal, a simple advantage of this ´understanding’ is that its intelligent imaging technology can even capture information that is obscured by stickers, thereby speeding up the entire check-in process and giving staff more time to concentrate on studying passenger behaviour.
Eden, speaking at this week’s Passenger Terminal Expo held in Barcelona, Spain, explained PassPortal may first be employed by Eurostar for use in its rail terminal in London’s Waterloo station. Following successful implementation, it is hoped that the system will soon be wheeled out in airports worldwide.

The face of terminal check-in and security systems could be set for change thanks to a new innovation that has the ability to automatically verify a passenger’s travel documents in one hit.
