April 3, 2007 (Press Release) --
CHARLESTON, SC — Water Missions International (WMI) hosted several events coinciding with World Water Day, March 22, to raise awareness about the ongoing global water crisis. The events also served as a means for raising funds to support the organization’s continual world-wide work of providing clean water to developing countries and disaster areas. WMI netted $143,000 throughout the week’s events.
On World Water Day, WMI hosted the fourth annual Water for Life Gala, where the organization announced the $4.6 million gift from the Pentair Foundation, the charitable giving organization of Pentair, Inc. to fund Project SafeWater-Colon. The Project is a three-year mission which will cost-effectively provide sustainable, safe water access and sanitation to the target population of Colon, Honduras. SC Governor, Mark C. Sanford, Jr., Charleston Mayor, Joseph P. Riley, Jr., the First Lady of Honduras, Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of SC, Edward Lloyd Salmon, and other Honduran government officials were among the 330 guests at the event.
On Saturday, March 24th WMI hosted the inaugural Water for Life Walk, a 3.5-mile walk through downtown Charleston, to raise awareness about the global water crisis. The Walk, emceed by WTMA’s Richard Todd, symbolized the distance traveled by
women and children around the world who walk an average of four miles each day to fetch their daily supply of water. Each participant had the option to carry a two-gallon bucket filled with dirty water. Signs bearing statistics of the global water crisis were strategically placed along the 3.5-mile route.
After the walk, participants enjoyed family activities at Hazel Parker Playground, including face painting, pictures with Piggly Wiggly’s Mr. Pig, and music by local up-and-coming artist, Nate Davis. A Team Spirit Award was given to the GEL Group for having the team with the most participants, numbering over 80 people. The entire event raised more than $11,000.
WMI is hosting the Water for Life Exhibit at the City Gallery at Waterfront Park through April 15, 2007. The exhibit displays photographs illustrating the effects of the ongoing global water crisis, as well as the continual world-wide work of WMI. The exhibit also hosts large scale silk batiks by Mary Edna Fraser, whose work illustrates an aerial perspective of the world’s changing environments.
