April 4, 2007 (Press Release) --
Hanging, pregnant and dimpled chads will once again enter the national vocabulary in 2008. Daily Variety reports HBO is preparing a film about the notorious Florida vote count in the 2000 presidential election. The film, to be called Recount, will be directed by the highly respected filmmaker Sydney Pollack. The film will recount events from Election Day through the appointment of George Bush as the winner by the Supreme Court, five weeks later. Scripter Danny Strong, who worked on Pleasantville and Seabiscuit, created the script. HBO brass reportedly considered releasing the film theatrically, but chose to go with the pay channel, as it would guarantee a large audience for the film.
Producer Paula Weinstein says the film won’t take a partisan point of view: "It's about a major event in American history, but it has no particular agenda or ax to grind," Weinstein said. But even a totally straight retelling of the incident may well have an impact on the 2008 polling.
“Not that Shia isn’t good looking; he gets better looking every day,” he continues. “But I wanted someone who also the girls would find accessible. And his eyes are so expressive. A lot of the performance in this movie is about what’s in his eyes. For me he was just the perfect choice.” And the director was just the perfect choice for my April Fools Day prank. Not everyone would have responded so harmoniously.
