April 7, 2007 (Press Release) --
Last week, Mozilla research group announced that is currently developing a new set tools, called The Cop. According to Mozilla Labs, The Coop is a Firefox addon in development that will let users keep track of what their friends are doing online, and share new and interesting content with one or more of those friends. It will integrate with popular web services, using their existing data feeds as a transport mechanism.
Mozilla decided to develop The Coop, because according to their opinion “one of the most popular uses of the internet was to send jokes, cute pictures, and news stories to friends and family (social networks) via email. Fast forward to today, and you’ll find that not a lot has changed except the medium. Now one of the most common uses of instant messenger services and social networking sites is to send people links to jokes, cute pictures and interesting news stories.”
What is surprising, however, is how little of this type of functionality has made it into today’s web browsers. The result is that when people think of tools for social interaction, email and instant messenger are at the top of their list, not web browsers.
And this how Mozilla decided that it’s time for new tools. According to The Coop project page, at the beginning this product should minimally provide support for the following use cases, making them intuitive, pleasant and delightful experiences.
1. Share a link with a friend.
1. Share a photo / set of photos with a friend.
2. Share a blog post with a friend.
3. Share a favourite video with a friend.
2. Keep up to date with a friend's web activity.
1. Read latest blog posts / LiveJournal updates / MySpace updates.
2. See recently uploaded photos.
3. Show recently tagged websites.
4. Show recently marked favourite videos.
The project is now at a “proof of concept” phase
What’s interesting is that there is already a web browser called Flock, which integrates some of the most popular social networking services. Flock's developers was promoting it as a "social browser", due to its ability to interact with popular social networking web services such as Flickr, Del.icio.us, Technorati, Photobucket, and various popular blogging and news aggregation services.
Shawn Hardin, Flock’s CEO, has posted on the company’s blog his opinion about the new Mozila’s project. Hardin dismissed any threat from Mozilla. “Mozilla's interest in this specific area is an enormous validation of the premise upon which Flock is based: that there are today massive opportunities to truly innovate the browser for a very large market and to support, simplify and enhance emergent online behavior like social computing and social media. This is what Flock has been innovating around and working on for more than two years -- this is why Flock exists!”
